Renovating the Bathroom

Bathrooms are the most-often remodeled room within a house. The importance of the ambiance of a bathroom is imperative if one desires this space as more than a room that is made use of for practical reasons. A bathroom should provide a place to unwind. Long hot showers or luxurious baths are less than what they could be if the surrounding were uninviting.

A family uses the bathroom more than any other room. Therefore it makes sense that it is the most remodeled room. A bathroom tends to become drab if the décor remains constant over a period of time.

The most common features in a bathroom include a white toilet, white tub, and typical white sink. Many renovations can enhance these items if a full remodel is not necessary or desired. The size of the project will determine the expense involved. A typical major renovation costs around the same as a small automobile. The average homeowner recovers around 85% of the remodeling expenses of a full professional remodel.

Ideas for partial remodeling include the installation of new faucets, adding grab bars to the shower wall, replacing the old mirror with a fog-free mirror, or putting in a spa bath. Simple and inexpensive ideas could be adding pictures or mirrors to the walls or placing appropriate accessories on the counter or on shelves. A few minor renovations can effectively enhance the atmosphere of the room.

Small projects such as exchanging the tub or shower with a new bathroom fixture, for example, placing a shower where the tub is or replacing the tub with a new tub require measuring the space available to be certain of the new fixture’s fit. Consider the floor plan to make sure the space is available for the project. When replacing a tub or shower, the old flooring and fixture usually does not match placement of the new fixture. The addition costs of flooring replacements will need to be budgeted at the beginning of the project in order to provide for sufficient funds. If the money is available, consider a complete renovation if the expense and magnitude of the project is already going to be sizable. It is less expensive to do an entire room at one time than to do it piece by piece.

Write a list of desired bathroom components. Consider your budget. Choose the items most desired first and add other objects if the budget allows. Plan carefully and stick to the plan. Frivolous choices are usually made by not following a plan and most often are later regretted.
